Boldly Going to Southern California
By Chris Kern
Opens: May 8
Rated:PG-13
Cast:Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Leonard Nimoy, Eric Bana
Director: J.J. Abrams
Any Trekker worth his weight in Tribbles has had Stardate May 8th, 2009 marked on the Captain’s log for months. Why? Because that’s the date director J.J. Abrams’s reboot of Star Trek finally blasts into theaters and onto IMAX screens across the country -- seven years after the last Star Trek adventure Nemesis hit theaters and nearly 30 years after Star Trek: The Motion Picture.
Two things you need to know about J.J. Abrams the director: first, whenever possible he prefers to shoot his films and television shows in Southern California, and second, he’s the rare action director who tries to use as many real locations and sets in his shoots as he can. “I wanted to always keep it feeling as real as possible, emotionally and physically,” he has said. “I didn’t want to have it all be green screens and CG. I wanted to build as much as possible.”
Although details about the plot and production have been kept under wraps tighter than a Vulcan nerve pinch, Fandango did manage to get the scoop about some of the movie’s locations. Set your phasers to stun and prepare to boldly go where few men and women have gone before – on a tour of Star Trek locations across Southern California.
